One of two people whose life was claimed by a single-vehicle accident at Canaries on Wednesday (Apr. 3) is yet to be identified.
The other dead crash victim is retired nurse Julietta Lionel of Canaries – the driver. The 63-year-old woman was transporting three of her employees when it toppled, causing it to catch fire. On board the vehicle were two men and a woman.
Lionel and her front male passenger did not survive the accident. Reports indicate that the two were trapped by their seat belts. Lionel was burnt beyond recognition, and her dead male passenger also suffered burns. The other two passengers were rescued by passersby.
SNO visited Lionel’s home in Canaries, where her husband of 12 years, Benadick Lionel recalled what he heard transpired. Benadick said based on what he was told his wife was heading down the hill, when her brakes failed her.
He explained that the vehicle picked up speed, along the cemetery and while she attempted to maneuver the vehicle in another direction, it overturned several times and burst into flames.
Benadick recalled his wife had dropped him off less than an hour after the accident took place.
He lamented about the manner in which she died, with an apparent sadness in his demeanour. He said she once worked as a nurse in London, where she has a son.
He described her as a loving and kind person. Relatives also considered her a peoples person.
Meanwhile, the other woman that survived the accident has been identified as 53-year-old Sramcies Maries of Canaries. She is a patient at the St. Jude Hospital.
The woman’s niece Lotta Andrew told SNO her aunt is in a critical condition. Maries suffered a broken shoulder, broken kneecaps and several lacerations about her body. Andrew said that her aunt was able to tell them what happened, but she is now in an unconscious state.
Andrew said her family is traumatised by what happened.
The male survivor as yet to be identified also.
