A popular meat and grocery business on Church Street, Soufriere suffered “minimal damages” in an early morning fire today, March 20, fire officials have reported.
Around 5:40 a.m. a “passerby” walked into the Soufriere Fire Station and reported seeing black smoke coming from the flat of the two-story building that houses Kai Poule Ek Viande, fire officials told St. Lucia News Online (SNO).
Two fire trucks and an ambulance responded and was able to, within minutes, extinguish the blaze which was confined to one section of the building, fire officials said.
“We did our best,” one official said.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but reports are that the fire appeared to have started close to a refrigerator, suggesting an electrical issue.
Two cash registers, two refrigerators and groceries were among the items damaged or destroyed by the fire.
The second floor of the building, which houses a clothing store and the main office, was not affected, fire officials said.
“It (fire) didn’t spread to any other room. It was discovered very early,” another fire officer said.
