An online fundraising campaign has been launched for two students and a lecturer from Spartan Health Sciences University in Vieux Fort who drowned off Cannelles Beach on Saturday, March 31, 2018.
The bodies of the two students have been recovered but the search continues for the body of the lecturer. All three were citizens of India.

According to updated information on the website, the funds raised through this campaign will be used to support the victims’ families, offset the costs to return the bodies to their families in India, as well as supplement the continued costs of the rescue and search team for Dr. Boopathi.
At the time of publishing the story, the campaign had garnered just over $5,000 of its target of $30,000 – raised by 28 people in two hours.
According to the GoFundMe campaign page for the trio, “On March 31, 2018 a tragic incident occured along the shores of St.Lucia. The lives of two medical students Indumathi Raman and Bhuvan Gengatharan were taken way too soon near Desruisseaux.
“The students encountered an unexpected rogue wave that dragged them under water and Dr. Boopathi jumped in heroically in an attempt to save the students. After about 40 minutes of intense struggling a local diver came to the rescue.
“A beloved professor at Spartan Health Sciences University, Dr. Boopathi Subramaniam attempted to save both students, however encountered great difficulty himself.
“While the bodies of the two students were recovered, unfortunately another wave pulled Dr. Boopathi under and the search continues for him.
“In this time of need, the spartan health sciences community of students, professors, faculty, and families come together in solidarity and strength to support one another.
“The funds raised through this campaign will help ease the sudden expenses of the funeral and to start a fund to care for Dr. Boopathi’s wife and three year old son.
“All cost to return the bodies to their families in India as well as supplement the continued costs of the rescue and search team for Dr. Boopathi will be beared by Spartan Health Science University. If you would like to help please make a donation in any amount.
According to his Facebook profile, Dr. Boopathi Subramaniam, was a “Senior lecturer at Spartan Health Sciences University and Director of Student Affairs & Senior Lecturer in Department of Anatomy at Spartan School of Medicine”.
He would have celebrated his 37th birthday on May 23, 2018, and he celebrated his sixth wedding anniversary on February 26, according to information from his social networking page.
Though police have not formally idenitified the individuals, law enforcement sources said the two students were reported to have been taking photos on the rocks at Cannelles Beach when a large wave took them. It is reported that a third person disappeared in the waters trying to save them.
The incident occurred around 11:54 a.m.
